Leipzig leave it late to break Real Madrid hearts

Leipzig's persistence pays off as they overcome first-leg deficit

Real Madrid's hopes of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals were dashed on Wednesday night as RB Leipzig produced a stunning comeback to win the second leg of their last-16 clash 2-1 on aggregate. Despite taking the lead in the first leg, Real Madrid were unable to hold on as Leipzig's relentless pressure eventually paid off.

Leipzig started the game brightly and created a number of early chances, but Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was in fine form to keep them at bay. The visitors gradually grew into the game, however, and took the lead in the 28th minute when Timo Werner fired home from close range. Leipzig continued to press for a second goal, but Courtois again came to Real Madrid's rescue with a number of impressive saves.

The second half saw Leipzig continue to dominate possession, and they eventually got their reward in the 63rd minute when Emil Forsberg equalised with a stunning strike from outside the box. Real Madrid were unable to respond, and Leipzig held on to secure a famous victory.

The result means that Leipzig have reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in their history, while Real Madrid's hopes of winning a record-extending 15th title have been ended.
