Massachusetts Officials Shut Down Boys Charity Ice Cream Stand Disappointed

Massachusetts Officials Put the Freeze on Boy's Charity Ice Cream Stand: 'Disappointed'

Meet Brayden Harrington

Harrington, 11, ran a popsicle stand in his front yard to raise money for the Jimmy Fund. His goal was $1000 to help kids with cancer.

The Amesbury, Massachusetts, boy set up his stand near his house, offering popsicles for a dollar each. He raised approximately $270 before city officials shut him down.

The city claims Harrington needed a permit, but his mother, Amanda, argues a permit is not required for a lemonade stand.

'Unclear and Inconsistent'

According to the city's website, "No person shall engage in the business of selling or offering for sale at retail any goods, wares, or merchandise of any description upon any public or private way or place without first obtaining a license therefor."

However, the website also states that "the sale of food items prepared in a private residence and sold off the premises is exempt from this requirement."

Amanda Harrington believes her son’s stand falls under the exemption, but the city disagrees.

Community Support

The community has rallied around Brayden and his family. A local business owner offered to host the stand on their property.

Residents are also organizing a protest outside City Hall on Saturday to demand the city reverse its decision.

A Disappointed Boy

Brayden is "disappointed" that he has to stop selling popsicles, but he remains determined to reach his fundraising goal.

He plans to continue raising money online and through other events.

The Jimmy Fund is a non-profit organization that supports cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
