Academy Awards to Honor Reeve for Lifetime of Achievement

NEW YORK (AP) - Christopher Reeve will present an award at the Oscars next month, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday.

The actor, who was paralyzed from the neck down in a 1995 horse-riding accident, will present the award for best director at the 74th annual Academy Awards on March 24.

Reeve, 49, has been a tireless advocate for people with disabilities since his accident. He has also continued to act, appearing in such films as "Rear Window" and "The Brooke Ellison Story."

Reeve's Appearance to Raise Awareness of Spinal Cord Injuries

The Academy said it was honored to have Reeve present an award at the Oscars.

"Christopher Reeve is an inspiration to us all," said Academy President Frank Pierson. "His courage and determination in the face of adversity are a testament to the human spirit."

Reeve said he was "deeply honored" to be asked to present an award at the Oscars.

"I hope that my appearance will help raise awareness of spinal cord injuries and the challenges that people with disabilities face," he said.

Reeve's Wife to Accompany Him to Oscars

Reeve's wife, Dana, will accompany him to the Oscars.

Dana Reeve has been a constant source of support for her husband since his accident.

She has also been an outspoken advocate for people with disabilities.
